As the Brazilian G20 Presidency starts today, 1 December, the Indian cooperative movement represented by its apex organization, National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) passed the baton to the Brazilian cooperative movement represented by Brazil Cooperative Organization (OCB) to continue cooperatives’ participation in the G20 engagement.
The transition happened during the International Seminar on prospects and future of India-Brazil relationship in agribusiness sector that was organized by the Embassy of Brazil in India. Shri Parshottam Rupala, Union Cabinet Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying from India, and H.E. Mr. Carlos Favaro, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil, were invited as Chief Guests.
During the ceremony Shri Dileep Sanghani, President of NCUI, expressed his satisfaction to participate in the transition of leadership to Brazil. NCUI had received this from the Indonesian cooperative movement. The NCUI along with its members have been active in the B-20, C-20, W-20 and Y-20 working groups. “Due to our active participation, the cooperatives found due mention in the final policy papers. The cooperative movement in Brazil is vibrant. The G20 Presidency under Brazil will provide the opportunity for cooperatives to showcase its valued contribution in achieving sustainable development” said Shri Dileep Sanghani.
The ICA will continue coordinating with its members through its G20 Working Group to ensure cooperatives’ voices are heard by the G20 leadership through their contribution in the discussions and in offering solutions to challenges being addressed by the G20.
Howard Brodsky, the ICA G20 Working Group Chair, said “The G20’s uptake of the cooperative business model as a component of its evolving global economic policy recommendations will lead to a greater understanding of the cooperative business model around the world that will ultimately empower individuals and local communities to elevate themselves out of poverty and help protect our environment and natural resources. The B20 urges G20 nations to recognize the importance of cooperatives and deploy policy levers to facilitate the participation of cooperative societies in global trade.”
